The Poetry of Violence
When Shakespeare explores violence it is often epic and cruel, but never gratuitous. Whether it’s Brutus considering a justification for murder in Julius Caesar, or Volumnia relishing the bravery and brutality of her warrior son in Coriolanus, Shakespeare asks questions about our relationship with violence. But he also uses the word to describe the limits of emotion, and the rashness provoked by love and hate.
Join Artistic Director Peter Evans and a crack team of actors as they jump from scene to scene and play to play, exploring the poetry of violence with relish and delight.
From Macbeth to Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet to Henry V, Peter will share insights into Shakespeare’s concerns and preoccupations and the inner workings of the plays.
In A Nutshell enthralled audiences in 2022 and Bell Shakespeare are excited to return with a second instalment in 2024. Whether you are new to Shakespeare, or an aficionado, you will be entertained, enriched, and inspired by this production. Performed in The Neilson Nutshell at Pier 2/3 in the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct.

The Neilson Nutshell, Pier 2/3 is located at 13a Hickson Road, Dawes Point NSW 2000.
The entrance to The Neilson Nutshell is located midway down Pier 2/3. Follow the signage for Performance Spaces. The Neilson Nutshell is located on Level 1 and is accessible by both stairs and lift.
Getting to Pier 2/3
Pier 2/3 is a brisk 15 - 20 minute walk from Circular Quay and Wynyard transport hubs. Hickson Road is serviced by the 324 and 325 bus service or the 311 to Millers Point. Pedestrian and cycle paths service Walsh Bay Arts Precinct from Barangaroo to Circular Quay. Metered parking is available on Hickson Road and paid off-street parking can be found at 26 Hickson Road (Interpark) and at the corner of Towns Place and Hickson Road (Wilsons).
