Set in the Myspace, flip phone and indie rock-fulled days of 2008, Sean Wang’s Sundance award winner follows 13-year-old Taiwanese American skater boy Chris (Izaac Wang) during the summer before high school.

A rambunctious and tender tale of awkwardness and postadolescence.

Useful information:

A deeply personal coming-of-age charmer set in the Myspace era

Winner of the Sundance US Dramatic Audience Award and US Special Jury Award for Best Ensemble Cast, Dìdi (which translates to “younger brother” in Mandarin) puts a new spin on the familiar coming of age genre. Navigating old friendships, new crushes and tricky family dynamics, Chris tries to find his place in the world in his final summer before high school. His big sister Vivian (Shirley Chen) is heading to college, and his artist mum (Joan Chen, Twin Peaks) longs to establish her identity beyond caring for her kids and their grandma (Chang Li Hua, director Sean Wang’s actual grandmother). With echoes of Lady Bird, Eighth Grade and Mid90s, Dìdi is a nostalgic nod to noughties culture and the tribulations of early adolescence, told through a Taiwanese American lens.
