About the China National Symphony Orchestra Chorus

Established in the 1950s, the China National Symphony Orchestra Chorus is affiliated with the China National Symphony Orchestra and is currently led by its Permanent Conductor, Wang Linlin. In 1959, the chorus made history by performing Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 (Choral Symphony) for the first time in the People's Republic of China. Serving as a cultural ambassador, CNSO Chorus has engaged in intercultural dialogues and promoted friendship between China and the world through music during many international tours. Over the years, the chorus has earned widespread acclaim for its masterful renditions of iconic works, including the Yellow River Cantata, Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, Mozart’s Requiem, and Orff’s Carmina Burana.

The Yellow River Cantata

The Yellow River Cantata is a monumental masterpiece created during the Second-World-War, embodying the indomitable spirit and resilience of the Chinese people. Composed in the spring of 1939 by the renowned musician Xian Xinghai (冼星海) and poet Guang Weiran (光未然) in Yan'an, this work debuted under the baton of Xian himself. The Yellow River Cantata is a timeless classic and one of the most beloved music scores in China.
