The Sydney Opera House has succeeded in what is perhaps its most ambitious performance to date.
This week, the multi-venue performing arts centre made its debut as one of the first World Heritage-listed buildings globally to have earned the performance rating which represents world leadership in environmental and social sustainability operations.
The 6 Star premiere is the culmination of 10 years of preparation, innovation and collaboration… and the results are breathtaking.
Over the past decade, the House has reduced its environmental impact both on and off the stage.
Highlights include reducing electricity and water usage by 20% since 2018; switching to 100% renewable electricity; diverting 95% event waste from landfill for Vivid LIVE; eliminating single-use plastic takeaway packaging from all venues and restaurants; and investing in nature-based projects like installing an artificial reef in Sydney Harbour which has attracted endangered species, including White’s Seahorses; and many more.
Audiences will also be dazzled by the way the interior and exterior spaces respond to current and future community needs
– with hands-on creative experiences for all ages in the new Centre for Creativity, as well as new accessible passageways, lifts and facilities.
However, the applause and accolades from the Green Building Council of Australia will not distract the House from reaching its next ambitious goal – to become climate positive by 2030. Preparations are already underway as the venue looks for innovative ways to electrify the building and operational fleet, and explores the possibilities of battery storage.
The stunning beauty and exceptional functionality will leave a lasting impression on all who visit, inspiring audiences to consider their own environmental impact and to strive for a more sustainable future.
