Under the Sails
Roz and Electra’s Wedding
Under the Sails shares the stories of those who say ‘I do’ and celebrate milestones at the Opera House.
Roz and Electra met through work in 2015 and seven years later they were married under the sails as one of the first female couples to be married at the Opera House, in a bold and beautiful ceremony in the Joan Sutherland Theatre Northern Foyer (JSTNF).
How did you meet?
We met at work. Roz was a manager in learning and development at Qantas, and Electra was a supplier delivering training programs to their Cabin Crew.
For months before we met, Roz kept hearing about this ‘amazing Electra’ at work with many colleagues telling her she needed to meet her!
When we finally met in 2015, there was an instant connection and friendship, we shared the same values and ‘joie de vivre’.
Tell us about the style of your wedding
We were looking for a bold and beautiful venue that would speak for itself. The Sydney Opera House was certainly it.
It was a red carpet affair, with a black tie dress code, and everyone looked incredible - very old Hollywood glamour.
We had our ceremony on the granite level of the Joan Sutherland Theatre Northern Foyer followed by a cocktail party on the ruby red carpet of the theatre foyer.
We designed an experience around good food and drinks, champagne, and music that kept you on the dance floor.
The sounds of the string quartet lured our guests into the Sydney Opera House as they played famous pop songs, which obviously sounded incredible in the Opera House.
The love in the room was palpable. Like nothing we have ever felt before.
What was the most memorable part of the day
We held our ceremony in the JSTNF and had the iconic red steps as our aisle up to the granite level. The love in the room was palpable. Like nothing we have ever felt before.
To this day, our guests, musicians, and our wonderful marriage celebrant Chris Pinto, still comment on the buzz they also felt on that day in the JSTNF.
Roz: “Walking up those stairs towards the beautiful Electra, and our family and friends all waiting to witness and celebrate our marriage was an indescribable and unforgettable feeling.”
Electra: “For me it was the string quartet playing Tina Turner’s Simply The Best as Roz walked up the stairs towards me”.
You were one of the first female couples to get married at the Opera House. What did this mean to you?
Sharing the news of our love with our traditional Greek and Italian families has been a journey for us both. For some time it had been the news we wanted to shout from the rooftops but didn’t always feel like we could.
Doing it under the sails of the Sydney Opera House with our closest family and friends was our way of finally shouting it from the rooftops.
A traditional institution and our traditional families coming together to accept and celebrate our love, was a special moment in history- in ours, in our families’, and in the Sydney Opera House’s 50 year history.
Why did you choose the Opera House as your wedding venue?
We are both Sydney born and raised. We have shared many special moments at the iconic Sydney Opera House, often over champagne at Opera Bar. It meant so much to us having this icon bore witness to such a significant moment in our lives.
