Useful Information:
A singular, soulful voice returns with a stunning new opus
A soulful singer, multi-instrumentalist and master producer, Grammy-nominated artist Jordan Rakei has electrified critics and audiences with his singular voice and ability to move between funk, jazz and alternative R&B across five acclaimed studio albums. Now, with his breakthrough new album The Loop taking his craft to the next level, the New Zealand-born, Australia-raised star is returning home to make his long-awaited Sydney Opera House debut.
Born in Tokoroa and raised in Brisbane, the young musician had already released two EPs and been nominated for the prestigious Australian Music Prize by the age of 21, before relocating to London, signing with legendary label Ninja Tune, and becoming a fixture – via his dance-music alter ego, Dan Kye – on the soul-electronic scene. His third album, 2019’s Origin, caught the attention of tastemakers, while his final album for Ninja Tunes, 2020’s singer-songwriter-inspired What We Call Life, earned him some of his most glowing reviews to date. At the same time, he collaborated on tracks such as Disclosure's "Masterpiece," Loyle Carner's "Ottolenghi," and Bonobo's “Shadows,” and found fans in heavyweight producers like Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin and Chic’s Nile Rodgers.
Rakei’s extraordinary, wildly ambitious new record The Loop marks a new chapter in the 32-year-old artist’s career, characterised by bold production, spectacular orchestral arrangements, haunting choirs and hypnotic beats. The album finds Rakei reaching back to his earliest inspirations – Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, D’Angelo – for a soulful epic that charts a course through times of darkness and hope.
Fresh from his buzzy European dates, Rakei will perform the new album in full at the Concert Hall for one night only. It’s one you won’t want to miss.
