Your Brain on AI

Presented by Sydney Opera House, Big Questions Institute and the University of Sydney

In a special event at the Sydney Opera House, theoretical physicist and cosmologist Paul Davies, philosopher and cognitive scientist Inês Hipólito and neuroscientist Brett Kagan will appear in conversation on Saturday 17 August to delve into how AI will impact human intelligence and our understanding of consciousness.

Hosted by the University of Sydney’s Dr Sandra Peter, a renowned expert on AI and emerging technology, this event brings one of the world’s best science communicators, Professor Paul Davies, back to the Sydney Opera House to tackle one of the great mysteries of life – consciousness. He is joined by fellow experts Dr Brett Kagan, who, in an Australian first with his team, created living biological neurons that learn from their environment, and Dr Inês Hipólito who specialises in the interaction of AI and human cognition. She also serves as the Ethicist of AI at VERSES – a computing company based in Los Angeles.

In this National Science Week event, these four experts will explore how AI is shaping the way we think – not just by replacing some of what we do but by direct intervention through technology that could change the brain itself – and will discuss other life-changing scientific developments that are fast approaching.

Sydney Opera House Head of Talks and Ideas, Chip Rolley says: “All the reporting tells us AI is developing at an extraordinary rate – with some arguing that profound changes could happen in the next five years. Your Brain on AI tackles what we find to be some of the most consequential and personal: from tech that could change how we think to radically new understandings about who we are. Curiosity drives the Sydney Opera House Talks and Ideas program, with conversations, such as this one, aiming to provoke discussion and examine zeitgeist issues in interesting and playful ways”.

Professor Paul Davies says: “I am thrilled to return to the Sydney Opera House, a landmark venue that embodies the spirit of innovation and discovery. With the advent of breath-taking new technologies, from our ability to ‘map’ the human brain in ever-greater detail to the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence, this event offers an exciting opportunity to fundamentally reconceptualise the relationship between mind and matter.”

Your Brain on AI is presented by the Sydney Opera House, with Big Questions Institute and the University of Sydney, as part of National Science Week.
