Opera

Mozart’s epic opera of gods and monsters, human frailty and the power of love.

Useful information:

The genius of Mozart. Opera at its boldest.

Drowning at sea in a vicious storm, the King of Crete makes a terrible vow to Neptune. To save his ship and his men, he will sacrifice the first human life he encounters on land. Saved from the waves, Idomeneo comes ashore into a nightmare – kill his own son or set the vengeance of the Gods upon his people.

Rooted in ancient legend, this powerful opera explores utterly human themes: sacrifice, love and human frailty. The music is a vivid showpiece of the composer’s power, subtlety and scope.

Lindy Hume’s new production highlights the natural forces at play in the story. The immersive set evokes Australia’s epic seas, skies and rugged coastlines.
