Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and Brett Weymark bring you a musical feast with Bach’s St John Passion – a vivid, dramatic telling of the Easter story in all its pathos and humanity.

This Easter, Brett Weymark conducts Sydney Philharmonia’s Symphony Chorus and Baroque Orchestra in Bach’s St John Passion

The St John Passion might have been written for a Lutheran Good Friday church service – a ‘sermon in sound’ – but Bach’s theatrical instincts found a perfect outlet in the rollercoaster of emotions in John’s account of the Easter story. There’s fury, betrayal, anguish, comfort – and underpinning it all a compelling humanity.

Leading the magnificent cast of soloists in this distinctive blend of narrative, drama and reflection is Evangelist Alexander Lewis, a singer of great theatrical instinct and vocal power. And the 120-voice Symphony Chorus will shine – bringing a fierce intensity to the crowd scenes, and a powerful communal spirit to the meditative chorales.
