Sydney Opera House services for people who are blind or have low vision

Audio description

An audio description service to enhance the experience of customers who are blind or have low vision is offered for selected performances at the Sydney Opera House. This is a live commentary of the visual elements of a performance, by trained volunteer audio describers. Audio description is relayed via a free headset and receiver linked to the FM radio system.

Assistance animals

Guide dogs or any animals trained to assist people with disabilities are welcome inside all areas of the Sydney Opera House. To ensure appropriate seating is allocated, please advise of your requirements when booking.

Tactile Model

In 2024, we launched the Opera House’s first tactile model. The artistic model is a 1:800 scale site model, moulded in bronze, of the Sydney Opera House.

Designed for visitors who are blind or with low vision, this model is used for audio described performances and tours. It aims to help foster a deeper connection with our site so patrons feel an increased sense of belonging– demonstrating our ambition to be Everyone’s House.

Thank you to our Sponsor Arup who generously gifted the model for our 50th anniversary, in celebration of the collaboration between Jørn Utzon and Ove Arup. Thanks also to CMF Metalworks, Modelcraft, Frost collective, Guide Dogs Australia, NextSense and Vision Australia for their contributions.
