Run time
This workshop runs for approximately 6 hours. This includes two 15 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch break. All breaks will be supervised.
Event duration is a guide only and may be subject to change.

This workshop is recommended for ages 12 - 16.

Supervision Consent Form
Please note this workshop is for participants aged 12-16 only. All Participants under 15 will need to have parent/carer permission to attend the workshop. Following booking, parents/carers will receive a supervision consent form to complete and return to the Opera House Learning Team. This form will include nominating a designated adult who will drop off and pick-up the participant. Young people will not be able to leave the venue without the nomintaed adult signing them out.
What to bring
Please bring snacks, lunch and a refillable water bottle. Please do not bring food that contains nuts.

Peek behind the curtain
Ever wondered what it takes to put on a show somewhere like the Sydney Opera House? Now is your chance to find out! Make a set model, design costumes and take a peek behind the scenes in a special backstage tour. Over the course of a day, participants will team up and take charge of a hypothetical musical stage show, guided by theatre designer Isabel Hudson and other arts industry professionals. Begin your theatre making journey these school holidays!

About the artist
Isabel Hudson
Isabel Hudson is an award-winning set and costume designer. Isabel holds a Bachelor of Design from NIDA and a Bachelor of Arts (Screen and Sound) from the University of New South Wales. She is a lecturer at NIDA in Design for Performance.
Design credits include: A Fool In Love, Constellations, Hubris And Humiliation, The Mousetrap, Jailbaby, Pony, Torch The Place Set, Blessed Union, Winyanboga Yurringa, Every Brilliant Thing, Maureen: Harbinger Of Death, Young Frankenstein Set, American Psycho Set, Cry-Baby Set, Farnace, Son, Rise And Fall Of Little Voice, The Shifting Heart, Blackrock, Edward The Emu, Dry Land Set, She Rode Horses Like The Stock Exchange, King Of Pigs, Eurydice, Jess & Joe Forever, Little Borders, Chamber Pot Opera, Intersection, Journey’s End, The Rolling Stone and Hurt.
For Global Creatures Isabel is associate set designer for Moulin Rouge Australia, Korea and Japan; for Opera Australia, Isabel was assistant designer for Merry Widow and My Fair Lady, and for Sydney Theatre Company, she was associate designer on Fun Home directed by Dean Bryant.
Isabel has won four Sydney Theatre Awards for her outstanding designs; best set design for Constellations, American Psycho and Cry-Baby, and best costume design for Hubris and Humiliation. She also won an APDG award for best set design for American Psycho. Nominations include an APDG Award for Best Set Design, and two more Sydney Theatre Award nominations for best set design. She was awarded the Kristian Fredrikison Scholarship in 2022 and The Thelma Afford Award for Costume Design in Stage and Screen in 2022.

Venue information
Our foyers will be open 90 minutes pre-show for Concert Hall and Joan Sutherland Theatre performances, and two hours pre-show for Western Foyer venue performances. Refreshments will be available for purchase from our theatre bars.
All Sydney Opera House foyers are pram accessible, with lifts to the main and western foyers. The public lift to all foyers is accessible from the corridor near the escalators on the Lower Concourse and also in the Western Foyer via the corridor on the Ground Level (at the top of the escalators). Pram parking will be available outside the theatres in the Western Foyer.
Getting here
The Sydney Opera House Car Park, operated by Wilson Parking, is open and available to use. Wilson Parking offer discounted parking if you book ahead. Please see the Wilson Parking website for details.
Please check the Transport NSW website for the latest advice and information on travel. You can catch public transport (bus, train, ferry) to Circular Quay and enjoy a six minute walk to the Opera House.
Frequently asked questions
We advise that you arrive 15 minutes prior to the event. Ticket purchases and collection at our Box Office is discouraged and eTicket or postal delivery methods should be used, wherever possible. However, if you are collecting your tickets from the Box Office, we recommend doing this at least 60 minutes before the event starts.
Prior to the workshop, please notify us if you will need a chair for the session, so we can have those available. Please email accessibility@sydneyoperahouse.com to request a chair or notify our team of any additional needs you may have.
The authorised agency for this event is the Sydney Opera House.
Only tickets purchased by authorised agencies should be considered reliable. Food and beverages will not be allowed unless specified in the event. Opera Bar, Opera Kitchen and Portside are also available to purchase food before your event. Please bring a credit or debit card for any on-site purchases to enable contactless payment.
