Waxahatchee
Indie folk star brings Tigers Blood to the Sydney Opera House
Sydney —
Hot off the release of her acclaimed new record, beloved Alabama-born singer-songwriter Katie Crutchfield – aka Waxahatchee – will return to the Sydney Opera House this December as part of her first solo Australian tour.
Waxahatchee made her Opera House debut in 2018 with a sold-out show in the Studio, co-headlining with singer-songwriter – and partner – Kevin Morby. Six years on, the alt-country star will perform her latest album, Tigers Blood, a magnificent collection of tender and introspective country-tinged songs stamped with the twang of her poetic Southern lilt.
Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Music, Ben Marshall says: “It’s a total joy to finally welcome Waxahatchee back to the Opera House, fresh off the release of her latest masterpiece, Tigers Blood. Always raw and intimate live, come witness the sonic scale and power of her work as she takes to the Concert Hall stage with her full band this summer. Katie's unsparing, shining vocals and evocative lyricism, paired with her band’s steadfast banjo, pedal steel and drums, promise an unforgettable performance from a remarkable artist on an ascendant arc. Waxahatchee's honest and commanding songwriting ensures her lasting presence in the music world.”
Since her teenage days playing with twin sister Allison in DIY punk band PS Eliot, Crutchfield has steadily built a dedicated fan base while evolving her sound from lo-fi indie folk to richly textured country and Americana. With a string of highly praised albums under her belt – including the 2020 career-breakthrough Saint Cloud, a heartland rock ’n’ roll masterpiece that yielded the singles Lilacs and Fire – the once-in-a-generation talent has arrived at her most potent songwriting yet with sixth album Tigers Blood. Led by the arresting collaboration with rising indie-rock wunderkind MJ Lenderman on the hit single Right Back To It, a nod to the classic duets of Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons, Tigers Blood has been released to breathless reviews – praised by Rolling Stone as “the sound of a master storyteller on a hot streak” and dubbed by Pitchfork as “dazzling, piercing songwriting perfectly in tune with the band behind her.”
